Employer Description
At Tree Aid, we work with people in the drylands of Africa to tackle poverty and the effects of the climate crisis by growing trees, improving incomes, and restoring and protecting land.
Founded in 1987, Tree Aid was established by foresters in the UK who believed that trees offer practical solutions to poverty and environmental degradation. Since then, we’ve partnered with communities in Africa’s drylands to create thriving, sustainable environments that support people and nature.
Our Mission
We empower people living in poverty across the drylands of Africa to grow and protect trees, restore land, and build enterprises from tree products so they can earn a living, feed their families, and protect their environment long into the future.
Where We Work
Our work is rooted in the Sahel region of Africa, where the effects of climate change, deforestation, and desertification are most severe. We have operations in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Niger, and Ethiopia, and we work in partnership with local communities, governments, and organisations.
What We Do
- Grow trees and restore land to help tackle climate change and improve soil fertility
- Support forest governance by helping communities secure rights to manage and protect forests
- Improve nutrition and food security by promoting trees that provide essential food and vitamins
- Create tree-based enterprises that help families earn a sustainable income
Our Impact
Since our founding, we’ve:
- Grown over 22 million trees
- Restored thousands of hectares of degraded land
- Helped 1.8 million people to improve their lives and environment
We are also proud to support the Great Green Wall initiative, an ambitious African-led movement to grow an 8,000 km wall of trees across the continent.
We believe that trees mean life for people, for nature, and for our shared future. Every tree we grow with a community is a step toward a more just and sustainable world.
