Job Summary
- Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery Limited is seeking a highly competent, experienced and results-driven Construction Project Engineer to join our team.
- The successful candidate must have strong practical construction experience, excellent project coordination skills, and the ability to translate engineering designs and project requirements into safe, cost-effective, high-quality facilities.
- The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning, engineering, execution, supervision and completion of construction and infrastructure projects across the Company’s facilities, ensuring that projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to the required technical and quality standards.
- The Construction Project Engineer will provide technical and project management leadership across construction, civil, structural, building services and infrastructure projects. The role will coordinate contractors, consultants, engineers, vendors and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
Responsibilities
Project Planning & Management:
- Plan, coordinate and manage construction projects from concept and design through execution, commissioning and handover.
- Develop project plans, work programmes, schedules, milestones and deliverables.
- Identify project risks, delays and constraints and implement appropriate corrective actions.
- Provide regular project status reports to Management.
- Define project scope, objectives, timelines, resource requirements and performance indicators.
- Monitor project progress against approved schedules, budgets and specifications.
Engineering & Technical Supervision:
- Coordinate technical interfaces between different engineering disciplines.
- Ensure proper site documentation, including site instructions, inspection records, progress reports and project correspondence.
- Construction Supervision:
- Conduct site inspections and verify that works conform to approved designs and technical requirements.
- Inspect workmanship, materials and installations to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Ensure construction activities are executed in accordance with approved designs, specifications, drawings, BOQs and applicable standards.
- Review architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and other engineering drawings and specifications.
- Verify project measurements and completed works for certification and payment purposes.
- Provide technical direction and resolve engineering and construction challenges that arise during project execution.
- Review technical submissions, method statements, shop drawings and material specifications.
- Ensure proper sequencing and coordination of construction activities.
- Monitor daily construction activities and ensure work is progressing according to approved programmes.
- Supervise and coordinate contractors, subcontractors, consultants and site personnel.
- Identify defective, substandard or non-conforming work and ensure corrective action is taken.
Cost & Budget Management:
- Review contractor valuations, payment applications, variations and claims.
- Assess the technical and commercial implications of proposed variations.
- Identify opportunities to control costs without compromising quality, safety or project requirements.
- Support preparation and review of project budgets, Bills of Quantities (BOQs), cost estimates and resource plans.
- Monitor project expenditure against approved budgets.
- Support procurement and commercial teams in evaluating technical aspects of contractor and supplier quotations.
Contractor & Consultant Management:
- Escalate contractor performance issues and recommend appropriate corrective measures.
- Participate in contractor prequalification, technical evaluations and tender assessments.
- Coordinate and manage relationships with contractors, subcontractors, consultants and technical service providers.
- Monitor contractor performance against contractual, technical, quality, safety and schedule requirements.
- Review contractor work programmes and recovery plans where projects fall behind schedule.
- Conduct regular progress meetings and ensure agreed actions are implemented.
Quality Assurance & Quality Control:
- Ensure non-conformities are documented, investigated and closed out.
- Coordinate inspections and testing of construction works.
- Establish and maintain appropriate quality control procedures for construction activities.
- Maintain appropriate project quality records.
- Ensure materials and workmanship meet approved specifications and applicable standards.
- Review material samples, test certificates and technical documentation.
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance:
- Identify construction hazards and ensure appropriate mitigation measures are implemented.
- Ensure proper environmental controls are maintained throughout project execution.
- Ensure construction activities comply with the Company’s Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.
- Stop or escalate unsafe work where necessary.
- Ensure contractors implement appropriate site safety procedures and controls.
- Conduct or participate in site inspections, toolbox meetings and safety reviews.
Procurement & Materials:
- Ensure materials are properly stored and protected against damage or deterioration.
- Support procurement teams in technical evaluation and selection of materials and service providers.
- Provide technical specifications for construction materials, equipment and services.
- Review technical aspects of supplier and contractor submissions.
- Monitor material deliveries to ensure compliance with approved specifications and project requirements.
Project Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date project documentation.
- Prepare weekly and monthly project progress reports.
- Maintain project records, drawings, approvals, inspection reports and completion documentation.
- Prepare project handover documentation, including as-built drawings, certificates, warranties and maintenance information.
- Track project milestones, deliverables, costs, risks, variations and outstanding actions.
Commissioning & Handover:
- Coordinate final project inspections and acceptance.
- Support post-completion evaluation and lessons-learned exercises.
- Ensure all required documentation is received before project close-out.
- Ensure contractors close out outstanding defects before handover.
- Develop and monitor project snagging and defects lists.
- Coordinate testing, commissioning and inspection of completed works and systems.
Requirements
- Relevant professional certification or membership of a recognised engineering institution will be an advantage.
- Minimum of 3years’ relevant experience in construction project engineering, preferably in a structured corporate, industrial, manufacturing, agricultural or infrastructure environment.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, engineering principles, project management and site supervision.
- Strong understanding of BOQs, cost estimates, valuations, variations and construction contracts.
- Demonstrable experience managing construction projects from planning through completion and handover.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Excellent project planning, coordination, problem-solving and reporting skills.
- Strong negotiation and stakeholder management abilities.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Structural Engineering, Building Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Proven experience managing contractors, consultants and multidisciplinary project teams.
- Strong knowledge of construction quality standards and Health, Safety & Environmental requirements.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and technical documents.
- Willingness to travel to project and operational sites as required.
- Proficiency in relevant engineering/project management and construction software.
